Following an old tradition of Georgian nobles, children were raised in peasant families. According to this tradition, the great Georgian poet Akaki Tsereteli spent his childhood with a nanny in a peasant family in the village of Savane. The poet wrote about his childhood: “If there is any kindness in me, it is more because I lived in the village and grew up with the peasant’s children.” St. George Church, built in 1046 is located nearby the house where he was brought up. The church is exceptional in its harmonious and sophisticated forms and ornaments.
