The gallery, located in the city center, stores important works of Georgian painting and fine art. It was founded in 1976, and its fund currently has about 3,000 exhibits. Among the paintings on display in the exhibition hall, you will find paintings by world-famous Georgian artists – Niko Firosmani, Davit Kakabadze, Felix Varla, and many other local artists. Davit Kakabadze, whose name the gallery bears, was born in a small village near Kutaisi. With the help of a Georgian philanthropist, he studied at St. Petersburg University, where he graduated in 1916. After a short return to Tbilisi, with the help of the Georgian government, he went to Paris and lived there from 1919-1927. His work is extensive. His paintings also show the picturesque villages of his native Imereti, and he also owns important cubist paintings, some of which can be seen in the gallery. Davit Kakabadze’s innovative visions are relevant even today. He created the concept of a glasses-free stereo cinema machine and also worked on the idea of modifiable lighting, 3D imaging, and more.
