Tamar Bridge

The stone-arched bridge is built over the river. at the gate. According to tradition, it was built during the reign of the greatest Georgian king Tamar (XII-XIII centuries). The bridge had great strategic importance because the Kutaisi-Tbilisi connecting road passed over it. The bridge was reconstructed for the first time in 1668, and again in 2018, and it is still operational. There are several such arched bridges in Georgia, when the rivers passing under the arched bridges were overflowing, the weight of the water impact came on the piers of the arched bridges, that’s why the piers were resting on the rocks. That is why the arched bridges are built on the rocky banks of the rivers, and the beautiful arched arc of the stones was fused with lime and sand, which has not disintegrated to this day.
