One of the most important monuments of Georgian culture – the Motsameta Monastery – is hidden in the gorge of the Tskaltsitela River, and beautiful mountains of Imereti. “Place of martyrs”, and “belonging to martyrs” – this is the meaning of the name of the monastery, which is often difficult to understand and pronounce for foreign guests. In the 8th century, during the invasion of the arab ruler Marwan ibn Muhammad in Georgia, the Arabs tortured David and Konstantine, the noblemen of Argveti, and threw their bodies into the Tskaltsitela River. The river carried the remains of the martyrs exactly where the monastery is located today. David and Constantine were buried in the Church of the Annunciation destroyed by the Arabs. The church was later restored and named after the canonized Mkheidze brothers.
