Katskhi temple was built at the beginning of the 11th century. It was built by the powerful feudal – Baghvashi. During its existence, the temple burned down twice and was rebuilt again in the 16th century. Katskhi Cathedral is one of the most outstanding and original monuments of Georgian architecture. An architectural monument of similar forms cannot be found anywhere else. The building is surrounded by a pentagonal wall. Bas-reliefs (mainly lion images) are located above all entrances to the church. All the bas-reliefs of the temple have Asomtavruli (Georgian script) inscriptions, and most of them are engraved.
