The central garden of Kutaisi once belonged to princess Darejan, the daughter of King Solomon I of Imereti. This garden was given to her as a dowry when she married Qaikhosro Abashidze. The garden was owned by the Princess of Imereti until 1820. Since then, it has undergone many transformations, but it has always remained the favorite gathering place of Kutaisi residents. In the 19th century, it was called a boulevard for some reason. The central garden was a location where gymnasists were having dates, poets and revolutionaries were holding meetings and the country’s main political issues were discussed and most importantly, nothing much has changed since then. The monument of the poet Akaki Tsereteli, as well as the statues of the composer Zaqaria Paliashvili and the famous Georgian singers Ishkhneli sisters, have been erected on the modern territory of the garden.
