In Georgia there is such expression – “All roads lead to the church” and this is not accidental. Christianity has played a great role in formation of Georgian character and originality. According to the holy sayings, Georgia was the chosen one of the Virgin Mary. When the apostles were considering which country to choose for preaching the Christianity, Virgin Mary chose Georgia. She handed her saint icon to the apostle St. Andrew and sent him to Georgia to preach.
The Georgian nation embraced the Christianity at the beginning of IV century, 300 years later after the Christ’s birth, but the spread of Christianity begun from I century BC. The first apostols were St. Andrewthe First and St.Simon Cananeus. At Present, our country keeps three great purity: Christ’s crucifying nails (Sioni Cathedral), Christ the Savior’s robe (Mtskheta), Holy Virgin Mary’s robe (Zugdidi).
For its part Imereti Region is an interesting and spectacular for the travelers interested in pilgrim tourism. Here is preserved Georgian architectural masterpieces: Bagrati Cathedral and Gelati Monastery. Equally important is Ubisa Church for its unique frescoes.
Eventually, it must be noted that historically, non-Georgians and representatives of various religions who live in Georgia have full discretion. As the French traveler, Jean Chardin wrote: “In Georgia you have right to live with your faith and traditions, discuss and defend it”. Religious tolerance theme still remains actual in today’s Georgia.
